I talk to clients everyday via phone and email receive a lot of questions! I know that there are a lot of options out there and, whether you ultimately decide to hire me or not, I want you to have the information that you need to make an informed decision. SO periodically I will post an answer to an FAQ (frequently asked question) and that FAQ will be added to my website... someday!
"Why to do you charge so much for a disk of images?"
This is a loaded question for photographers. First, understand that we hope that clients are hiring the photographer and not the camera. Most photographers honestly believe that they are creating a piece of art and that you are the subject of that artwork. In our case, every image that you receive on your disk has been custom designed in our digital darkroom and also converted to our custom black and white counterpart. We consider ourselves to be artists and, as you can imagine, we spend a lot of time on our clients' images to make them just right and convey that certain "feel" that represents who you are. This is a level of quality and service that you are not going to find at Sears Portrait Studio.
Second, as artists we give up a certain amount of rights to our artwork when clients have control of the images on the disk. It's the digital age and times have changed. We risk having our images floating around in cyberspace or other media without our name attached to it. We could force clients to order prints at very high prices (and not
offer the disk) only to have that client scan those images and make
reprints on the cheap (that is copyright infringement by the way). So, we have decided to give our clients a personal use copyright which allows us to maintain the copyright of the image while allowing you to use your images for reprints and other personal projects. We want you to have your images. We want people to be able to afford us and we need to be able to make a living!
We realize that the traditional business of photography is not the future of OUR business. Ultimately I see clients choosing photographers because of their style and not because of their packages or print prices. So prints and packages are becoming the icing on the cake for people who don't have the time to do-it-themselves and studios are now selling themselves and their style more than ever.
The business of photography is changing and we hope that we have found a happy medium for our clients and for us.
